What I would tell you

What I would tell you about Lennon, if you wanted to know... and I hope you do!

Lennon is a beautiful and sensitive soul. He hates wearing too many clothes. Especially socks. He always wants to eat carrots, but they make him gag every time. He says "bye bye" anytime he is feeling sad, disappointed or anxious... I guess it's his way of letting you know he doesn't like what's going on. When he starts to cry, he tells himself, "it's Okay..." in between sobs.
His memory, is incredible. He memorizes songs, lines from commercials, jingles, and the order of things.. keeps them all in place in his mind, and can retrieve them whenever he wants to. He sees the opening of the "Color Crew" show, and even though, to me, they all look exactly the same, he somehow knows this episode, is the episode about "brown." He repeats. -ESPECIALLY when it's something he really shouldn't be saying...   He has ZERO sense of volume control.
He loves to watch you, watching a video that he enjoys. Sharing his interests with his family is very important to him. He hides from the liberty mutual commercials- like, drops down on the ground, behind cover, when the ads start. He can ask for some things, like, "up" "again" "bathtime" "goodnight" and "outside".. you know, the essentials! He understands... much much more than we often give credit for. Sometimes, I'll catch him patting Loie gently on the head, or holding onto her foot or hand, while she grins at him. He loves to watch his reflection or his shadow, while he moves, dances, waves his arms, and talks. Sometimes, he'll close his eyes really tight, and smile. I wonder what he's seeing....
Lennon's got JOKES! He picked up my underwear from the laundry basket one day, as I was putting clothes away, and he holds them up in front of him, and says, "A T- SHIRT!" At night, sometimes (okay, many times) I have to shush him, and remind him to "be quiet" because people are sleeping. Then, when he climbs the furniture, and I sternly say, "Lennon get down!"  He doesn't miss a beat - he shushes me and says, "be quiet!"
Lennon doesn't sleep. He naps. Most nights he will wake up, full of energy, ready to start the "day," only he doesn't appreciate the fact that it's the middle of the night still. He'll get to giggling at something very specific in a video, and will watch it over and over, collapsing with laughter. He loves to make us laugh, too. He's a clown!
Lennon gives us lots of clues about what he's thinking and feeling, we just have to look hard for them, and put the clues together in the way he intends them. Sometimes it's easy, and other times, I feel like a failure as a mom. I want so badly to just be able to talk with him. Not to him. not about him, while he's right there, listening...absorbing. I want to know what his favorite animal is. I would guess the giraffe? I want to know what his favorite color is... blue? maybe yellow.... What does he want to eat? Where does he want to go? Is he lonely? Why is he crying? Does he understand,- that when I have to walk out the front door, and he's so upset, he's being held back, physically, while he screams at the top of his lungs, hitting himself on the head.- that I'll be coming back...  Or does he really think each time, that I'm leaving forever? Does he understand danger? Why does he run off, or crumple to the floor when we go out somewhere? Is the world too much for him sometimes? Will other people love him... will other people make the effort to understand him. . .Will he have friends? Because of Lennon, I look at people differently. I look at the world differently. I feel more. I fear more. I don't know a world without our Lennon, and I don't want to. He provides that fresh outlook, and the laugh to relieve the tension throughout the day. He gives love unconditionally, and asks for virtually nothing in return. He makes everyone smile, with his silly moves and expressive face. His big, brown eyes make it IMPOSSIBLE to stay mad at him. And when he cries, he always tells himself... or maybe he's assuring us.... "It's Okay."
This is Lennon. This is our boy. Or a very small glimpse of our boy, who has created a world for us, that we have the privilege of sharing with him, every day. :)

This coming week is going to be a full one, with lots of big appointments and also the usual fanfare thrown in for good measure. To update, Loie has indeed been discharged from her home health care nurse :( Sad face, only because we love Sami and will miss her boisterous personality coming through our door, giving us helpful advice, smiles, and always confident hope! Thank you Sami for seeing us through the rough transition from NICU to home. You have been our training wheels so to speak, and you are not just a nurse, but you are a mom who "gets it" too. I can't believe it has been six months since we took Loie home from the hospital.... Loie weighs exactly 13 pounds now, as of her latest appointment. She had a brief time where she was teetering and even lost a little bit of weight, because we've all been hit hard with autumn-time illnesses. Poor Lennon woke up one night, on FIRE with a 104 degree fever-turns out was caused by strep throat. :( Loie developed a rattl...

This is our normal

A snapshot of our week: Home health care nurse visit Neurology eval Pediatrician followup Infant toddler program visit Occupational therapy .... that was the first day... Next day was ophthalmology followup (every two weeks) more OT Norco medical supply delivery (twice because at 9 pm the oximeter went kaput and they did a night delivery) And so on. I am in a constant state of worry that I've forgotten some important appointment. Ah the life of a "medically fragile/complex" family! Loie is growing! She met her last weight goal, low side, but still met it! She's at 7 lbs 12 now! Struggling to increase her volume of intake cause she spits up a TON and gets refluxy. She has started smiling at her jingly toys! She likes the sound I think :) this is a huge deal to us! Seeing her smile is another big milestone and we are grateful for each one! She also lifts her head really well during tummy time! No "cooing" yet, which is ok cause really she's ki...

Belonging/ Soul Therapy

Day 4 Belonging There is this "club." You join this club when you are a parent who loses a child. You don't have a title as an official member- there isn't one. You join silently. You don't get a big ceremony with other members. You quietly meet them by finding them in areas of your day to day life, and you share a sad knowing smile. You feel their support and you find some solace in the fact that they are the only ones who "get it." No one wants to be in this club. I hate it. But i don't get to quit or unjoin, and I am a known member. Other people in my life now treat me as a known member. When i meet new people, i have a choice to reveal my membership upfront, or have it revealed later,  because at some point, with any real relationship, it will be. There is a sense of separateness within me. Often it is imagined and created by myself. How do I relate to people now? I don't know. Not yet.. I'm still figuring out who I am now. It's o...
