Well, miss Loie has gotten her first pair of glasses! And what a difference they seem to make! No joke, she is looking around so much more, smiling so much more, and actually taking much more interest in her toys! Who knew? poor little thing must not have been seeing very well at all...
She looks adorable, we think.
The idea is to let the glasses help her see for a while (she's very far sighted) and hope that it corrects her strabismus (crossing.) Hopefully it will correct it enough that she won't need any eye surgery. So far, so good! she's only had them a few days now. She (mostly) leaves them alone, and we think she is actually enjoying being able to see better, with less strain. So, she leaves them on her face, except when she is tired and starts to rub her eyes. Lennon saw them, and immediately wanted to grab them off her face! He loves glasses! and right now, he's also into hats. But, not wearing them, just putting them on other people.
We had a heart melting moment the other night, when Lennon was being super sweet, and gave his Dad some kisses! On demand! Then, he gave Nanny some kisses!! and with some extra prompting and some time, he also gave Mama some kisses too :) Yes, this is the first time Lennon has given me a kiss. Yes, I was overjoyed! My sweet boy! His vocabulary is really starting to take off too, and he LOVES reciting all his colors, letters, numbers, and favorite characters (as always.) he is also surprises us with random new words too, like Tree, seed, Leaf, Ribbit, Quack... etc etc. He has well over 80 words now! We still have him in speech therapy, but through the infant toddler program now. Big goals are getting Lennon to be able to tell us what he wants, like what he wants to eat. Right now, even though he knows the words for all kinds of things, he can't seem to tell us what he wants :/ He will get there though, we know it! he is the smarted kid. We were playing with crayons, and I started writing numbers for him (upside down from my perspective, right side up for his) when I got to "4" I accidentally wrote it backwards. He dramatically twisted his head around, to see it the "correct" way and then said, "Four." But, first, he had to make me feel stupid. :P He has started to try to sing along with his favorite songs, and will "Jam" to all the ones with a good beat, like "the bear went over the mountain" or "Here we go Loopty Loo" hahaha.
Loie is doing great, still working in PT to try to get her back strength up! She is close to, but not yet rolling over. She is close to, but not yet sitting up. Especially with her glasses, she is getting GREAT at manipulating toys, grasping, and transferring back and forth. It makes me so happy to see her enjoying her toys! She loves crinkly and jingly things that make all kinds of noise. It gets harder and harder for us, as the girls' first birthday rapidly approaches. Of course, for Loie's sake, we want to keep it a happy day, celebrating the gift of a beautiful girl, who we almost lost, and the gift of her sister, who we got to have with us for six short weeks. In submitting the endless paperwork, applying for services, I went back through Loie's medical records, and was reminded of how dire her situation was. "Respiratory failure." "Critical" "Grade 4 IVH (brain bleed) with cystic PVL" "Patient will have significant handicaps, both motor and cognitive" "further interventions should be discussed to consider if patient's best interest."
and, my personal favorite, "Parents seem to understand the gravity of the situation and were appropriately tearful." Yes, yes we were. I know I probably shouldn't put that stuff on here, but I just want to show her off, and show how lucky we are. Luck? I don't know if that's the right word, but she is here, and she is smiling and beautiful and working so very hard to reach her milestones! Pearl lives on in her sister, forever. I don't look forward to the anniversary of her death. I can hardly breathe just thinking about it now. All we can do, is hold each other tight, and be strong as a family, cause it's gonna hit us like a tidal wave.
We'll be okay. Please forgive me if I'm a mess in the coming months.
